Design considerations on sloped sites
Design decisions specific to sloped sites, such as level differences, retaining structures, drainage and view orientation.
A slope is data, not a constraint
Read correctly, a slope turns into an advantage for views, privacy and natural light. The way to seat a building on its land is to step it rather than force the levels.
Retaining and drainage
The balance of cut and fill determines the need for retaining walls and therefore the cost. A drainage system to carry surface and ground water away from the building must be designed from the outset.
Access
Site access is a separate topic on sloped land; material transport and crane positioning directly affect the construction programme.
Terraces
Stepped terraces both create usable outdoor space and soften the scale by spreading the mass across the land.
