Architectural solutions combining stone and timber
Massing, detail transitions and structural logic in buildings where the two materials are used together.
Why together?
Stone provides weight, continuity and thermal mass; timber offers lightness, warmth and fast erection. In traditional Anatolian buildings this pairing was mostly resolved with a stone ground floor and a timber upper floor.
Transition details
The line where the two materials meet is the most critical point, both structurally and for waterproofing. Timber must not be in direct contact with stone; a moisture barrier layer is required in between.
Massing
The solidity of the stone mass is balanced by the rhythm of the timber elements. Intermediate elements such as balconies, eaves and pergolas are the tools that establish this balance.
Difference in maintenance
The maintenance cycles of the two materials differ; timber elements should therefore be designed to remain accessible.
